Bran Stark is in a world of trouble after “The Door,” the latest episode of Game of Thrones. Big spoilers follow, so if you haven’t seen it, get thee to a nunnery—and watch the newest episode. Here’s the long and short of it: The Night’s King attacked the weirwood tree, and Hodor, Summer, most or all of the Children of the Forest and even the Three-Eyed Raven are dead. Only Bran and Meera survive, and Meera’s no Hodor. She can’t carry Bran around at all. It’s a dire situation, with only one way to survive—the sudden appearance of a benefactor. A certain Coldhands. A certain Benjen Stark.
Game of Thrones Season 6: The Time Is Right For Coldhands
In the books, Coldhands is a dead man of the Night’s Watch who helps Bran Stark get to the Three-Eyed Crow and helps Sam and Gilly get to the Wall. He’s undead, but he’s no wight, and he has power over nature. The show cut him, to our great sadness and consternation, but his time is clearly now at hand. In the parlance of the Common Tongue, Bran is totes screwed if he doesn’t get help. Meera absolutely can’t get him out of there on her own. And there is no help left beyond the Wall. Even most of the wildlings have gone south.
But Coldhands is still out there. Benjen Stark, Bran’s uncle, is still out there. He disappeared ranging north of the Wall during Season 1 and hasn’t been seen since—although we’ve suspiciously heard a lot about him lately. Jon Snow’s murder involved Benjen—the Night’s Watch got him to come out into the night by telling him they had at last heard news of his lost uncle. Of course, it was a lie, a mere pretext for stabbing him. We’ve seen Benjen in Season 6 too, in Bran’s own flashbacks. And he is still lost north of the Wall.
Such a figure could quickly save Bran and help him get away from the Night’s King—and bring him back toward the Wall (and let’s hope the Night’s King’s mark doesn’t damage or destroy that all-powerful shield). There’s already a hint that this will happen. In the trailer for the next episode (above), you can see a mounted man with a flaming weapon coming upon Bran and Meera in the night. This is their savior. This is Coldhands, or Benjen Stark. It’s what us book fans have wanted for untold years. And if we’re really, really lucky—despite some intimations to the contrary—Coldhands and Benjen Stark will be one and the same.
