Where will life on earth be 65 million years in the future? It’s a question that Studio Snowblind’s newest title, Glaciered, will look to answer, as the newly established Japanese developer officially announced the game. To celebrate the unveiling of this unique, Animal Kingdom-esque title, Studio Snowblind unveiled the first trailer which you can check out below.
Glaciered is currently confirmed for PC via Steam, so no word yet on additional platforms. There’s also no release date yet, but given that it has a proper listing, it would make sense if we see Glaciered released sometime later this year or in 2023.
As the name implies, Glaciered takes place below a sheet of ice, on an Earth 65 million years in the future. Called the “Everwinter,” this Earth has transformed into one covered with glaciers, a cool idea that’s also somewhat rooted in reality given that another Ice Age is entirely plausible millions of years in our own timeline.
In Glaciered, you play as a Tuai, an aquatic creature directly descended from birds and considered the successors of the dinosaurs. The Tuai possess great intellect and unique metabolism that have allowed the species to survive this harsh new reality dominated by large, dangerous marine life. Their head kind of looks like a dolphin, and it would definitely make sense if that’s the case, as dolphins are one of the most intelligent animals out there.
The gameplay looks incredibly crisp, with the trailer showing the Tuai facing off against several crocodile descendants as well as a Great White Shark. The latter is believable in the context of not evolving much in the span of 65 million years, as it’s still one of the most feared animals in our oceans. The Tuai’s adventures will take them to various unique ecosystems in this world, from grasslands within the bottom of the ice to a life-filled seafloor.
Glaciered will support Nvidia RTX features to allow for a breathtaking and immersive experience on PC, including ray tracing and DLSS. Also, 8K textures will be implemented for the main characters.
