Klei Entertainment revealed a new project on Monday morning, a new parkour game called that looks much different than what we’ve come to expect from the studio in recent years, and our first glimpse of the game certainly has us curious about Hot Lava.
Over the last few years, Klei Entertainment has become known for its work on genre-defining two dimensional games, like Don’t Starve or Invisible Inc., but the studio is finally taking its first strides into the world of 3D gaming with a new project called Hot Lava. The name might not tell us much but anyone who grew up with an overactive imagination should recognize the premise: You are a superhero, maybe a secret agent (we aren’t 100% sure), and the floor is comprised entirely of molten magma. So how are you going to get from Point A to Point B?
In the trailer, Klei turns the nostalgia meter up to 11, showing several unidentified characters navigate a living room inexplicably filled with molten rock while Saturday morning cartoons play on the television. We see characters bounding across the coffee table, hopping from one couch cushion to the next and using other household objects/appliances to travel between rooms. The rule of thumb seems to be something along the lines of: if mom ever yelled at you for climbing on an item (like the couch) then it's probably fair game in Hot Lava. But the action won’t be limited to the house. Our first glimpse at Hot Lava seems to show a player exploring the inside of a volcano, early screenshots confirm the inclusion of a school, the school gym makes an appearance in the trailer and we’d bet there are plenty of other spots to visit, too.
Unfortunately, additional details on Hot Lava are scarce at this time. Klein is currently accepting beta applications, from those who’d like to help test early builds of the game, but there’s no word on launch platforms or a release date for Hot Lava. A PC launch seems like a lock. But we'll have to wait to find out if Hot Lava is headed to PS4 or Xbox One. For now, anyone interested in Klei's next game will have to settle for the minute or so of gameplay from the game’s first trailer.
