After a grueling three-day tournament, the winner of the Battle of the Five Gods is Team Liquid’s Hungrybox. In an incredibly heated final, Hungrybox on Jigglypuff managed to beat out Mango’s famous Fox, winning both sets of games. Mango beat Armada in an even closer match to get to the winners finals. The tournament, which took place at SxSW in Austin, pitted 20 of the best Super Smash Brothers players in the world, with five of them being considered “gods” for a $25,000 prize pool. Hungrybox was one of those gods and took home $13,000 for winning the whole thing.
Hungrybox has had a hard but successful year. He won Dreamhack Winter 2015 and Pax South of this year. He has also struggled with being in the spotlight, telling his fan base how he feels in a famous YouTube video . Regardless about how he feels about popularity, he can take pride in knowing that he is one of the best Smash players in the world.
I don’t really understand all the subtle nuances that make a player that good at Super Smash Brothers. I just see characters zooming across the screen, beating each other into a percentage pulp. What I do know is that this weekend’s tournament was epic from start to finish. I have never been so enthralled by a game I don’t even understand.
The games start at 5:44:00
