The ink is barely drying on a deal between Apple and Samsung for 100 million OLED display units , reports the Korean Herald. The specifics of the agreement may mean that Apple plans on boosting the technology used in the Plus size iPhone model compared to the 4.7-inch iPhone model.
Beginning in 2017, Samsung will supply Apple with these higher quality OLED display units for roughly 3 years, according to 9to5Mac, which also notes that the agreement seems to only include orders for 5.5-inch sized display units.
The iPhone 6s Plus has a 5.5-inch screen while the iPhone 6s has a 4.7-inch screen. It seems unlikely that Apple will increase iPhone screen sizes in future generations of the device, especially considering the popularity of the 4.7-inch screen compared to the 5.5-inch screen. The tech giant just recently invested in an updated version of a 4-inch iPhone, the iPhone SE.
To put it another way, Apple has undoubtedly realized that the customers purchasing the iPhone 6s Plus now are not buying the device because they want the bigger screen size, but because it’s seen as a luxury model compared to the iPhone 6s. Other than a slightly more stable camera and the bigger screen, the main drawing power of the iPhone 6s Plus is as a status symbol.
If Apple were to differentiate the 5.5-inch model even further with more expensive technology, customers willing to spend the money on higher-end purchases will have even more of a reason to spring for the option.
OLED technology is currently used with the Apple Watch, and is brighter than normal LCD display while also needing less energy to power.
