The League Of Legends Facebook page has just changed its icon, teasing a lore update for champion Annie. A picture of a flower burning for the “the dark child” alongside two icons of Tibbers and a plant have also been discovered on the PBE. Her lore page has been updated, removing her past storyline and replacing it with “her story begins in the ashes.” This could also mean a new legendary skin is coming, but she did get a Super Galaxy skin in 2017, and currently has one of the largest skin wardrobes out of any champion in the game.
The backstory of the little girl with the powers of the human torch has been in limbo ever since the revamp of League’s identity more than two years ago. She was originally the child of two Noxian rebel mages who led the Gray Order, and wanted to free the rest of their magic-wielding brethren from the tyranny of Swain and his army. Over time, they had a child who turned out to be more powerful than anything they had ever seen before. At the age of two, a monstrous bear in the woods tried to attack Annie, but she just used her magic voodoo and turned it into a stuffed doll.
Leaving aside the ethical implications of imprisoning an animal inside a stuffed bear, Annie just doesn’t really fit into League’s overall aesthetic. Being the game’s youngest champion, Riot Games has to make sure not to overstep their boundaries and attract the “lollies” when making a backstory. She’s powerful in spite of her naivete, a formidable mage with untapped potential and a desire to burn the world she barely knows. She’s also my favorite champion, and if she gets ruined with this rework, I’ll be posting many angry articles.
Annie was one of League Of Legends original 40 champions, and her abilities haven’t changed much since then. She’s also been a control mage with a knack for engaging team fights, a champion for players that don’t need flashy mechanics. She’s simple, fun to play and works with any team composition and I’m crossing my fingers, toes and my Tibbers doll that they don’t fuck it up.
