Riot just announced that they will be adding rotating game modes permanently into the game . Previously, game modes were added at random and released to the public for only a few weeks before going back into the vault. Now, game mode will change on the weekends, cycling in old classics with some newer modes. Ultra Rapid fire, the April Fool’s joke mode that became a League phenomenon, will not be ready by April 1, but will be available to play at least twice this year.
Rotating game modes will have their own queue next to classic and ARAM and will be released during the next patch. You can earn champion mastery points in these modes and they will give loot when Hextech crafting goes live. Riot will release a schedule for what’s to come soon, hopefully in time for the release.
Here are a list of the game modes that have already been released in League of Legends and will most likely be used again:
Ascension:
A sandstorm rages on the Crystal Scar - R.I.P. Dominion - and teams need to acquire 200 points to win. You gain these points by getting kills or acquiring different objectives around the map. Xerath stands in the center of the map, and whoever kills him gets the “Ascended” buff which increases a champions size and stats while decreasing their healing. If you die while the “Ascended” buff is active, the buff is lost until Xerath respawns.
Black Market Brawlers:
On Summoner’s Rift, players purchase brand new items and pick unique minions to send at opponents. You use Krakens to buy and upgrade these new minions, known as brawlers. You get Krakens every 60 seconds or by killing enemies and epic monsters. Each brawler can be upgraded and given new powers and abilities, like increased durability or damage-over-time.
Doom Bots
Doom Bots was my favorite mode when it came out. You fight against five AIs who have incredibly overpowered abilities. Lux shoots lasers from every direction, Tibbers is the size of a lane, and Ziggs ultimate throws out even more bombs. I would watch streams where pros tried to beat the mode on its hardest difficulty, only to lose embarrassingly.
Hexakill
This was a regular game on Summoner’s Rift with six players instead of five. The fun of this mode was seeing how overpowered a team composition you can make, or what lane everyone should play. There was no pre established meta so anything could be done. Want two mid laners? Go for it, nobody is going to yell at you this time.
Legend of The Poro King
This was the only game mode to take place on the ARAM map, and was just weird. Players had three little poros follow them around, and could hurl them at opponents. If the poro landed, they could teleport to what the Poro hit. If ten poros landed, the Poro King was summoned and would push up the lane, throwing poros into the air. It sounds ridiculous because it is, and I can’t wait until the fluffy-mustached King returns to the high peaks of Valoran.
Nemesis Draft
In Nemesis Draft, you create your enemy’s team composition. There really isn’t much to it, you just try and give the enemy worse champions than what they give to you. I started maining Galio after this mode came out, because everyone was giving him to me. This mode is full of Yoricks, Zyras, and the occasional sadistic Teemo.
One For All
Everybody gets the same champion, sounds simple right? This game mode was the most fun to play, with everyone throwing lasers and spears all over the map. One for All started out as a glitch that players started to exploit on the ARAM map. They realized that you can have 10 Heimerdingers on one map and create insanity. Riot liked the idea so much they turned it into a real game mode.
Ultra Rapid Fire
Originally a joke created by Riot, URF has turned into the community’s favorite game mode. Every champion has unlimited mana and maxed cooldown reduction, before any items are bought. All summoner spells had their times at least halved, so everyone would just spam teleport and flash whenever they could. This mode was all about fun, which is sometimes hard to find in a game as competitive as League of Legends .
