The Star Wars cinematic universe may have just been blown wide open if Samuel L. Jackson’s comments are true. According to the actor who starred in Episodes I-III, Mace Windu, the Jedi Knight who died at the hands of Emperor Palpatine, is still… alive. Even more shocking is the rumored George Lucas seal of approval.
Jackson broke the news on an Entertainment Weekly radio show, where he said “of course” his character was still alive, adding, "Jedi can fall from amazing distances. And there’s a long history of one-handed Jedi. So why not?"
As for the George Lucas connection? Jackson said he shared his theory with the Star Wars creator, who proceeded to give the actor his plot continuity blessing. "George doesn’t have anything to do with it anymore," he said before explaining the director’s reasoning. "George is like, 'I’m okay with that. You can be alive.'"
This is a pretty *shocking* revelation considering Mace Windu’s death by lightning via Sith Lord Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. But if Windu truly is alive, it’s pretty cool news! After all, the purple lightsaber-wielding Jedi was one of the few fan favorites from the prequel movies. Windu served on the Jedi High Council and was regarded as one of the most powerful and respected Jedi throughout the galaxy.
According to Jackson, Windu survived the Force Lightning and subsequent fall (from literally, like, a thousand stories) and remained in exile, following the lead of Obi-Wan Kenobi. If so, we may have another Star Wars spinoff film in the works or, at the very least, a Mace Windu appearance in Star Wars: Episode 8 or 9.
