Starting off the press release warning that “An empire will burn,” Netflix finally set an official release date for Marco Polo Season 2. Mark July 1 on your Netflix binge calendar. Marco Polo Season 2 will premiere with 10 episodes on July 1st at 3 a.m. EST.
Netflix didn’t update the series description, so there’s no new details on the plot of Season 2.
In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, Marco Polo, is based on the famed explorer's adventures in Kublai Khan's court in 13th Century China.
Marco Polo follows a Venetian boy (Marco Polo), who was left by his father in the hands of the King of the Mongol Empire Kublai Khan in exchange for passage on the Silk Road. Marco Polo begins to learn Mongolian culture and studies martial arts. Kublai Khan sees Marco Polo as an asset as he seeks to conquer and rule the world. In the Season 1 finale, Kublai’s Mongolian Army overpowers Jia Sadao’s troops and defeats the Chinese City of Xiangyang.
Netflix gave us a taste of the series continuation with the One Hundred Eyes special in December, which was well received among fans. However, the show’s first season received largely mediocre reviews. Netflix’s war-ridden medieval drama competes with HBO’s Game of Thrones which has captured the hearts of viewers with amazing cinematography and a wild, blood-hungry storyline.
While the two shows are have similar settings, the plot details are vastly different. Many consider Marco Polo to be unoriginal, but seeing the series has historical validity it may just be that viewers consider it to be boring in comparison to Game of Thrones’ twisted, unpredictable five seasons.
The Marco Polo cast hasn’t been shy to keep us up to date on the filming of Season 2. Here’s what they’ve been up to on set in Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Budapest.
