With the transition into 2016, attention has turned to the bulk of the major awards season with the Golden Globes and Academy Awards approaching. One of the contenders for this year’s Oscars is the Ridley Scott sci-fi epic, The Martian. Starring habitual rescue-needer Matt Damon, The Martian made loads of money at the box office and impressed critics with its visuals, acting and scientific accuracy.

The Martian certainly isn’t a guaranteed winner at the Oscars, but the space adventure is definitely in contention. Like critics and general viewers, the Academy might end up convinced - but they haven’t seen the honest trailer yet. The good people over at Screen Junkies are back with another installment of the popular web series. After many requests, they decided to give The Martian the honest trailer treatment, and boy is it pretty revealing. Ridley Scott may have been exposed on this one. Take a look at the honest trailer for The Martian, below:

Of course, one of the main criticisms of The Martian isn’t necessarily the movie itself, but the man who stars in it. Screen Junkies points out that Matt Damon has been rescued in films a whopping EIGHT times. Is Matt Damon intentionally playing these types of roles or is that just an extraordinary circumstance? Either way, man is that character device getting kind of old.

The honest trailer also points out the fact that Damon’s character, Mark Watney, arrived on Mars with multiple survival items from previous missions still perfectly intact. He even has an old, but functional space shuttle to get him back home. Seems pretty convenient that all of those objects - the car, the greenhouse, the shuttle - are all perfectly intact.

There are other hilarious bits too - the random fame and support for NASA (in what world?), and the ridiculous amount of complex space math used throughout the film. And did Watney really need to record everything he did at all times. What about when he needed to do… you know. He was up there for awhile, as Screen Junkies pointed out.

Let’s see if the Academy considers any of those factors when it comes time to hand out the Oscar. What are your thoughts on The Martian’s chances? Let us know in the comment section below!
