Some of the best games of the early 2000 are coming back for the new generation. Remedy Entertainment announced yesterday that it is remaking Max Payne 1 and 2, to be delivered as one package.
Rockstar, the owner of the IP, will provide funding and will publish the games, while remakes will be developed using Remedy’s Northlight Engine. The profits of the sales will be shared between the two parties.
“Under the agreement, Remedy has a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game,” said in a press release.
The Remakes
The remakes will be released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. The fact that the title will not be available on past-gen consoles means we can expect a good-looking project because the decade-old hardware won’t hold back the game’s visuals.
As of right now, the game is in the concept development stage, so it’s gonna be a while. Don’t expect the title to release anytime soon. Besides, the developer didn’t provide a release window.
About the Developer
Remedy Entertainment also developed the original games. Remedy has proven itself to be a respectable studio, which produced critically acclaimed Control and Alan Wake. Given its history, I would expect a high-quality product.
The Original Games
The original Max Payne 1 and 2 were released in 2001 and 2003, respectively, and both received positive reception. The fact that Remedy itself is remaking its own game makes us feel that it will treat the IP with respect.
Another sequel, Max Payne 3, was developed exclusively by Rockstar and was released in 2013. It received critical reception, but the tone of the game was quite different from its predecessor.
Other Releases, Remasters, and Remakes
It seems like Rockstar is very interested in its older games. A remaster/remake of Red Dead Redemption has been long rumored. Three GTA games were recently remastered, and GTA 5 was ported to the new consoles.
I just hope that Rockstar will eventually bring back Manhunt as well.
