The creator of the "Minecraft" franchise, Markus "Notch" Persson, sparked rumors for a sequel to the game after announcing plans to start development work on a spiritual successor to the game in 2025.
Persson also said that he had basically announced "Minecraft 2" and was only giving "an honest shot" at creating a worthy successor to his beloved game. He added that he thought fans actually wanted him to make another title that was similar to his first.
Spiritual Successor to Minecraft
He noted that he loves the chance to work on games again and that he plans to be clear and honest about his next project. Persson said he fears that his next game will be washed up, which is something he will actively try to avoid.
Based on the "Minecraft" creator's post, it seems like he has already secured the funds needed for the project, and development could already be ongoing.
One notable thing about the situation is that Persson's next project cannot actually be "Minecraft 2," according to Games Hub.
This is because Microsoft already has rights to developer Mojang and that particular project. However, Persson made it clear to fans that he is not trying to make an actual sequel that will "sneakily infringe" on the "incredible work the Mojang team is doing."
He added that he does not plan to overstep his boundaries and affect the success that Microsoft has had with the brand. Persson said he respects the developers who are working on it now and will let them do as they please.
Working on the New Game
"Minecraft" is widely considered to be the best-selling video game of all time, and Persson served as a figurehead of the franchise for several years. The game and developer Mojang were both sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, the Video Games Chronicle said.
Things have been going well for the "Minecraft" brand in the last few years, and in 2024, Merlin Entertainments acquired global theme park rights to the franchise. This is the group behind the Alton Towers, Peppa Pig World, Madame Tussauds, and Legoland.
Persson also explained some of his inspirations for the spiritual successor, noting that there may be people who like his work but do not share his preference for retro nostalgia.
There was also a poll on X that asked fans to choose between two options where "Make Minecraft 2, boomer" got more than 79% of the total votes, according to Gaming Bible.
