Mr Robot creator/writer/director Sam Esmail is staying very busy. Hollywood Reporter announced that he is developing a miniseries based on Fritz Lang’s famous 1927 film Metropolis. The project is in early stages of development so don’t get too excited yet. The Studio, Universal Cable Productions, indicated the miniseries won’t launch for another two years. This timeline makes sense as Mr. Robot is expected to end after two more seasons.
The series will keep the broad movements of the original film. From Hollywood Reporter: ‘ Like the original film, the small-screen adaptation will take place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system.’
The series is set to follow Westworld in the fledgling genre of super high budget robot based TV. Like Westworld , Metropolis is expected to cost roughly $10 million per episode. This is fitting as the original film was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time of its release. We have no information yet as to how many episodes the miniseries will have. Stay tuned for more coverage as we learn more about the project.
