Nintendo released a new Nintendo Direct today! Yay! Well, it’s a Nintendo Direct Mini. And they don’t talk about the online service yet. And almost all the rumors were fake. It just wasn’t as Earth-shattering as we were hoping. But that’s OK! If history is any indication, there will be another full Nintendo Direct soon.
Take a quick look at the Nintendo Direct archive on the Nintendo site. There are three other Nintendo Direct Minis that have occured, not counting the one released today. The first one, on Oct. 2, 2012 was followed by a full Direct on Oct. 25, 2012. The second took place on Nov. 27, 2012 with a full Direct following on Dec. 5, 2012.
The last time we saw a Nintendo Direct Mini was on July 18, 2013, with a full Direct following on Aug. 5, 2013. All three of these Direct Minis have been followed by a full Direct two or three weeks later. That means we could see a full Direct releasing around Jan. 25th or Feb. 1st.
To add fuel to this, Twitter user Nintendeal took a screenshot of the Japanese Nintendo Direct archive site, noting a new space had opened up. Nintendeal claims this is the best indicator that a new Direct is coming.
It would make sense for Nintendo to have another announcement soon, as fans have some burning questions that should have been answered a long time ago. The biggest is Nintendo’s online service coming to the Switch. The Big N hasn’t coughed up any details about when the paid online service will launch, and the only information we have is a potentially false leak about Fall 2018. It seems crazy we could go this far into a new console’s life without a proper online system being implemented, but here we are.
Thankfully, Switch owners are not at a loss for games to play, and this Direct Mini only served to further excitement about more games. Who cares that we didn’t see GTA V on Switch when we have Dark Souls, The World Ends With You, free Super Mario Odyssey DLC and a new Mario Tennis game (complete with story mode)?
That said, this is speculation based on what has happened in the past. There hasn’t been a Nintendo Direct Mini for years, so Nintendo may have changed operating procedures. Plus, it’s Nintendo. They make weird decisions all the time, like stealth releasing a Nintendo Direct Mini at 9 a.m. with no prior announcements.
