We first discussed the Pokémon Go Buddy System earlier this week. And now, some more details about the feature have leaked, courtesy of the GAME_MASTER Github. The latest information reveals how far trainers will have to walk to receive rewards and how long it will take our monster friends to evolve.

According to the leak, it looks like candy rewards will be doled out after 1 to 3 km of walking. Each of Pokémon Go’s monsters has a different threshold for when the candy is earned, but the basic rule of thumb revolves around rarity. Rarer Pokémon, like Dratini for example, take a full 3 km of walking for rewards. A Pidgey, on the other hand, spits out candy after just 1 km.

Since we are talking about candy, it’s also important to note how long it will take our buddy Pokémon to evolve just by walking with them. According to the stats, more common monsters could take anywhere from two to six hours of walking to advance to the next stage. The vast majority evolve in closer to nine hours, while the most difficult ones could take anywhere from 35 to 37 hours!

There’s lots of data to be considered, and the full chart with every individual stat can be read here. The major point to take home is that even though the Buddy System makes candy more common, it’s scaled so that Pokémon Go’s rarest creatures remain rare. In other words, evolving a buddy Magikarp into a Gyarados is possible, but it requires a ton of footwork.

For those that missed the news, Pokémon Go’s Buddy System is essentially the mobile equivalent to walking Pokémon. They follow trainers outside their Pokéballs and offer candy for walks. It’s intended to work similarly to the egg hatching feature that currently exists. Trainers can only have one buddy active at a time, but they can be swapped out freely.

Pokémon Go is available now on Android and iOS.
