Earlier this week, Niantic CEO John Hanke hinted on features arriving to Pokémon Go in future updates. Of course, trading has been a staple in the franchise and will be expected to join the game shortly. However, there's something else too – something that is even more immersive than the augmented reality experience that we have now.
Hanke hinted that Pokémon Go may soon feature AR device support, leading speculators to suggest devices like the HoloLens and Google Glass. However, it looks like the interesting new feature has been hiding under our nose all along.
Pokémon Go may get Google Cardboard support. Via Business Insider, tipster Anthony Castrio discovered a label that reads "Licenses" under the settings menu. There you'll find "Google Cardboard" written at the top.
In hindsight, this makes a lot more sense. At just $20, Google's low-cost Google Cardboard makes it the perfectly cheap companion for the multitude of Pokémon trainers that roam the streets.
Still, How exactly will Pokémon Go work with a Google Cardboard? After all, the whole interface depends on the camera feature to locate a 'mon and a finger swipe action to throw a pokeball and catch it. A Cardboard does not have a cutout for a camera, nor is there an effective way that gives users access to the screen in order for them to play Pokémon Go the way it's currently meant to be played.
What's more, from "lure" robberies to stumbling over corpses by the river, Pokémon Go has already given players enough trouble as it is. We're definitely anxious to see how a VR headset will affect the way the game is played.
