Pokémon used to be a simple game, where you caught little forces of elemental destruction in spherical prisons and made them fight for your amusement. Over the years, the game has gotten so much bigger, with dozens of lands to explore, hundreds of Pokémon to meet and even a trip up into space. Keeping track of which game follows which or which timeline is the real one gets really hard to follow, but let me try and help you out a bit.
What Exactly Is The Correct Pokémon Timeline?
Key Member of Gamefreak and Scenario designer of the Pokémon games, Toshinobu Matsumiya tweeted the exact timeline way back in 2014. We know the official timeline for the Pokémon games is this: Fire Red/ Leaf Green/ Omega Ruby/ Alpha Sapphire > Heartgold/ Soulsilver/ Diamond/ Pearl > Black/White/> Black2/White2/X/Y.
Somewhere along the way, the Pokémon games diverged into multiple realities. In the original Red/Blue/Gold/Silver/Ruby/Sapphire , there weren’t any Mega evolutions because those games took place in an alternate timeline. In OR/AS , we find out there is a Hoenn region exactly like the one they live in where Pokémon evolution took a “slightly different path.”
The meteor that brought Deoxys to our world was crushed by Mega Rayquaza, but in a world without Mega evolutions, that meteor might have just crushed the whole planet. The world also could have ended when AZ activated his superweapon in X and Y . It’s a pretty dark way to address issues with canon, but that’s what Gamefreak wants to do right now.
We don’t know where Sun and Moon or the original games take place, but we can take some truly wild guesses. My guess would be somewhere after the original Kanto games and Black and White because there are just so many references to Red and Blue in Sun and Moon .
Reality breaches and Ultra Beasts are some of the biggest players in the post-game of Sun and Moon . You encounter Anabel, who seems to be ripped directly out of another Pokémon game. She literally went from the original Ruby and Sapphire to Alola, via a wormhole. Even her music at the Battle Tree is the same chiptune sound from the original games. Anabel used to be in the charge of the Battle Tower in Hoenn and for some odd reason she’s in Alola.
What Is Really Going On In the Pokémon Universe?
It seems like reality is completely falling apart in the Pokémon world. Here’s my theory of what’s going on, cobbled together from random internet research, a crazy mind and way too much time on my hands.
Remember Hoopa, that little djinn Pokémon found in the code from X and Y ? The little bugger can open up portals to other dimensions, jumping around dimensions at will. In OR/AS , the post-game content has you flying around on a mega Latios and Latias encountering the most powerful Pokémon to ever exist. Dialga and Palkia, two Pokémon who might have made reality, are just chilling in the sky inside of a portal. A portal that looks suspiciously like Hoopas.
My guess is that something bad is going down in the next few Pokémon games, something that will change everything we know. An evil force that can only be defeated by nature itself? Something more powerful than Arceus? Hoopa is trying to amass an army that can take out the threat, which would make for an insanely cool Pokémon game.
Hoopa could have created the Ultra Dimension for all we know.
