Entertainment Weekly has nabbed an exclusive look at the new suits for the 2017 Power Rangers movie and they’re much more G.I. Joe than Green Man. That’s right, the spandex bodysuit days are over. Instead Trini, Zack, Jason, Kimberly and Billy will have extraterrestrial armor that “crystallizes around their body.”
Other than the color schemes, the 2017 Power Rangers suits look like they could be worn by almost any action sci-fi character of the past few years. The suits wouldn’t feel out of place in Pacific Rim, Transformers or G.I. Joe. Still, for the surprisingly dedicated Power Rangers fanbase it represents a dramatic departure, prompting director Dean Israelite to explain the character motivation behind the costumes. “ The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” Israelite told EW. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
The costumes would also seem to confirm a popular fan theory for the 2017 Power Rangers: Rita Repulsa is a renegade Green Ranger, with degraded but similar extraterrestrial armor:

“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies said, “You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
