League of Friends, Riot’s official League of Legends app, has just been released for iOS, having previously been available only on Android. Right now, the app only allows you to chat with players on your friend list, see their rank and add other League players. Riot has plans to add other features like champion summaries and voice communications as the app grows. The app has a sleek design and retains the aesthetic of the main League client. It might not do a lot, but it looks great, the Mordekaiser rework of apps.
The app is pretty simple at this point: other apps like Lol Connect already allow you to do most of the same things. The only thing it does differently is allow you to add friends to your friends list while outside of the game. This sounds miniscule, but it’s actually a very important addition. I wear my League pride whenever I can - Thresh hoodie OP - and find real people who play the game as well. Sometimes it sparks a conversation, and we discuss our favorite champions or why being stuck in Silver is the worst.
As we part ways, I’ll share my summoner name. Sometimes they’ll write it down, other times they’ll say they remember. I almost never get a friend request that night, and I feel sad like Amumu. Sometimes they give me their IGN, and I just totally forget to add it in-game. Riot has been pushing League players to connect with their real-life friends more, and this helps.
It still doesn’t bring much to the table, but at least we have a table now.
