Jagex recently sent out a player survey that floated a range of new membership tier ideas for "Runescape" and "Old School Runescape" that resulted in players cancelling their subscriptions en masse.
Some of the more controversial parts of the survey include the one that has "ads included" as well as another that is called "conjoint membership that subscribes you to both games.
The latter is paid annually for $350 and would include "enhanced player support" and give exclusive server access.
New Runescape Survey Sparks Backlash
One more noteworthy thing about the latest development is that not all players received the survey, or even the same survey for that matter. This has led to people posting about the ones they received online and talking about them in further detail.
The developer has not yet made anything official in the survey and said that it was simply asking players about their feelings regarding the ideas. However, it seems quite obvious that people are not feeling good about them, according to Games Radar.
What makes matters worse is that the company has a history of intrusive microtransactions, especially in "Runescape." The fact that the studio even proposed the ideas has resulted in people raising pitchforks and expressing their discontent.
Jagex put out a blog post addressing the issue, saying that the survey exists and includes controversial or polarizing topics to find out what players truly like, dislike, or feel strongly about. It noted that no final decisions have been made, adding that they are listening to the community.
More Expensive Subscription Options
The survey also comes as membership access for "Runescape" has also increased in price since September last year.
Another idea in the new survey raised the idea of splitting subscriptions for both games instead of a combined package that is used right now, PCGamesN said.
There were also some very expensive options included in the survey, such as a $10.99 subscription that would only apply to one game for one month.
This is compared to the current version that costs $13.99 for membership to both "Runescape" and "Old School Runescape."
Other parts of the survey talked about applying limitations to the basic tier, such as including ads, making AFK timers shorter, or only letting players access the game on mobile devices.
While there have been many complaints about the ideas in the survey shared online, the best summary would probably be one user who said, "Jagex, you have just f***ed up and done irreparable damage," according to PCGamer.
