The next Samsung phone may have a 4K display perfect for placing into a VR headset like the Samsung Gear VR according to reports from UploadVR. They snapped a couple pictures of prototypes Samsung was exhibiting at the Display Week conference in San Francisco, and the possibilities are enticing.
The rumor has it that the Samsung Galaxy Note 6 (or Samsung Galaxy Note 7, depending on who you ask) will be the Samsung phone that carries the 4K display for VR flag into the battlefield. The display that Samsung was showing in specific is the was 5.5-inches diagonally (the Note is 5.7-inches), but it did have a 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution.
This is almost a 50 percent increase in pixel density, to 806 ppi, compared to previous displays. The prototype display can also reproduce 97 percent of the color gamut, and a has a 350 nit brightness level to boot.
For comparison, the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros recently released by Apple only have a pixel density of 264, while the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have a pixel density of 326 and 401 ppi respectively.
Also showcased by Samsung at the Display Week conference was a technology called Bio Blue, which reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the display. Considering that the Samsung Gear VR headset idea is centered around having a phone display less than inch away from your face, this technology could be crucial in helping bringing a painless VR experience into the mainstream.
