I don't know if you remember, but, at one point, South Park: The Stick of Truth DLC was going to be a thing. A real thing, not just a few costume packs and pre-order bonuses. Once upon a time, back when the world was young and the game was being published by a Titan of the Ancient World, the game was going to get pretty substantial DLC. So what happened? And are we ever getting it?

So, South Park: The Stick of Truth was amazing, as we said in our review. I am not going to knock it: It was definitely the complete package. But it was such a unique game that I hope you won't blame me for wanting even more. And, back in the THQ days, it seemed like 'more' was indeed something we would get. At the time, Inside Game Daily reported that the game would have at least three DLC packs, "each a standalone adventure with its own episodic story." And that would be amazing.

Alas, the only South Park DLC we've seen so far were costume packs that granted characters special powers. Not too much in the way of adventure or episodic story in those things, my dears. That and an April patch are the only additional... uh, additions... we've seen to the game so far. And it's been a long time now (but not Bioshock Infinite 'long time').

If not for those ancient reports that DLC was in the cards, I would simply assume it would never happen: any new content would require the direct, active, and time-consuming participation of Matt and Trey, which is a tall order in and of itself. And Trey Parker doesn't really like DLC in the first place, which may be why we're stuck with just costumes. Costumes don't have voices.

And that's the big sticking point with South Park DLC. If Matt and Trey already did the voice recordings for it and already scripted it, then yea, we'll get it sooner or later. If they haven't, it's going to be a very tall order indeed. An insurmountably tall order. It's nothing without them. Sure, they could conceivably work on it next spring, in between projects. But the game will be a year old at that point, and only on the old consoles. Not gonna happen.

So what happened to that promised South Park DLC? Chances are it just got lost in the shuffle in the THQ bankruptcy. Ubisoft picked up the game and spent a full year getting it up to snuff, including adding in more stuff from Matt and Trey. Whatever the original plans were, they went straight out the window. Which is really too bad, because it's a great game, and I would love to see more of it. Unfortunately, I don't think we ever will.
