In just a few minutes of Captain America: Civil War’s expansive runtime, Marvel delivers the best cinematic treatment of Spider-Man. Only Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 comes close. The age-appropriate (he’s now 20) casting of Tom Holland gives us a superhero that stands in stark contrast to the adult Marvel lineup filling up the rest of the Avengers roster. So while the shine may be off the apple for the endless franchise budding of the Marvel cinematic universe, it’s hard not to get excited about upcoming high school movie Spider-Man: Homecoming and a John Hughes-inflected future for Marvel’s most popular superhero.
While there’s been lots of casting news and some leaked set photos, little is yet known about Spider-Man: Homecoming. With the release date almost exactly a year away, we’re likely still a ways off from a trailer. But this photo Tom Holland posted to his Instagram feed gives us a fun sense of what might be in store:
It appears to be the same costume Spider-Man donned in Civil War (designed by Iron Man), complete with mechanical webshooters. And while a lot of attention has been focused on the comedic powerhouse casting (including Hannibal Buress, Donald Glover and Michael Mando, presumably as teachers), the picture proves that Spider-Man: Homecoming won’t skimp on the high-wire stunts.
- Hilarious from start to finish
- Spider-Man's place in MCU solidified
- Underserved supporting characters
- Tony Stark is an asshole
