After the latest Splatoon 2 update (version 1.1.1), some data miners sorted through the new code of the Nintendo Switch game and found some upcoming updates, including new weapons, stages and possibly letting players choose Octolings instead of Inklings.
The Splatoon 2 data mine leak comes courtesy of reddit user OatmealDome, who gives credit to the Wii Sports Team for the mining.
The mining uncovered revamped versions of maps like Kelp Dome and Blackbelly Skatepark, which have not yet been introduced to the game. There are also four planned stages for Salmon Run, the new multiplayer survival mode.
According to the data mine, there will be a brand new weapon type introduced in Splatoon 2. There will also be new weapons introduced by Grizzco in the Salmon Run mode. As for the aforementioned possible playable Octolings, that’s a bit trickier than just finding playable models in the code.
Here is what the data miners found in Splatoon 2 ’s code. If you don’t want to be spoiled about upcoming Splatoon 2 content, don’t continue.
MAPS
incomplete files for revamped versions of Kelp Dome and Blackbelly Skatepark have been introduced in the 1.1.1 update.
There are additional maps named Line and Tunnel which are in development.
Placeholder images for maps revealed in the Direct named Kawa and Pillar are present.
Nintendo is including testing versions of Shifty Station in the updates; however, for Splatfest the game downloads the real stage model and layout file separately. This explains why the existing files include debug and test objects.
The developers are currently testing new Salmon Run stages with internal names of Shakehouse and Threepoints. New files for these maps have been introduced in the 1.1.1 update as well. These are the last of the 4 planned stages for Salmon Run as of version 1.0.0.
WEAPONS
Grizzco brand weapons are in the works. A Blaster, Charger, and Brella were found in the files.
A new weapon type called the Squeezer is in development. Here is Sheldon's explanation text for the Squeezer and an alternate version of it.
“The Squeezer main is a new type of semi-auto shooter where one
trigger pull equals one ink shot! Holding down [ZR] won't provide a steady stream of ink, but spamming the trigger will give you rapid fire with a damage output you'll dig! Set up a Splash Wall to protect your team, then head for the front lines! The semi-auto style is a great way to control your ink use. Put even far-off foes on notice with the Sting Ray special! If you've got confidence in your aim, give this single-shot set a try!”
Foil Squeezer:
“We took a Squeezer, slapped the manufacturer's logo on it, and the Foil Squeezer was born. BOOM! The main weapon has the action of the original Squeezer, but it now comes with Splat Bombs. So flush 'em out, then take careful aim! Blow up the front lines with the Bubble Blower special, then charge in with your team and take out the opposition! It's a fairly aggressive set, but the main weapon requires steady aim, making it suited for veteran battlers.”
OCTOLINGS
What was known as the player's gender from the original Splatoon has now been replaced by a parameter called PlayerType.
Another parameter called PlayerType shares the same values as another parameter, ModelType.
The possible values for these parameters are SquidGirl, SquidBoy and Oct.
Near those values, we have found an additional value named OctBoy. This is based solely on information found in the Splatoon 2 executable; we do not have models, text, etc for boy Octolings at the moment.
Additionally, since the values of PlayerType and ModelType are shared, we cannot confirm that the Octolings will be playable either without testing in-game (which isn't possible for any of us to do).
