Star Wars Battlefront 2 has yet to begin its second season of content, and representatives at DICE recently confirmed the delay via Twitter. According to a Tuesday tweet from the game’s Design Director Dennis Brännvall, the team had lots of thinking to do after Battlefront 2’s rocky launch.
When a fan asked Brännvall if the wait for Season 2 was nearly over, he said, “Yes. It's later than expected and plans had to change following the reception at launch. We've had to recover and do some soul searching,” he admitted.
That soul searching likely revolves around a complete overhaul to Battlefront 2’s highly randomized progression system. While increases in credit yields and reductions in item costs have made leveling up far more bearable than it was in November, DICE still has a more complete solution in mind that’s set to debut sometime next month. The developer has yet to detail exactly how progression will change, but promise more disclosure about in the weeks ahead.
As for Season 2, in-game news posts have hinted it's "coming soon" for well over a month. In fact, very recent teases from Brännvall himself continue suggest that prequel trilogy content, possibly related to the Clone Wars, will be part of the upcoming festivities. When asked about the possibility of heroes like General Grievous and Greedo, Brännvall replied “that’s an odd couple of villains you just asked about.” To make the prequel hype even clearer, tweets from last month mentioned Jar Jar Binks, Anakin Skywalker and classic prequel-era musical themes.
No date has been revealed for Season 2 yet, but DICE’s current development cadence suggests a possible release sometime in mid-to-late February. The team is currently working to provide a major content update every four weeks, which means the next one is slated to arrive around Valentine’s Day. The patch is currently going through certification to prepare for its wider public release. We’d imagine Season 2 content might be part of that upcoming update.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 endured an infamously rocky launch, thanks to the game’s inclusion of highly intrusive loot crates. While all forms of microtransactions were removed from multiplayer in response to pay-to-win fears, the discussion surrounding Battlefront 2 has been far less positive than its creators had hoped. What was intended to be a mea culpa for its 2015 predecessor turned into one of the biggest gaming disasters of 2017. The game has apparently underperformed at retail, caused notable drops in EA’s stock value and prompted federal probes into possible gambling mechanics. All that being said, hopefully the previously mentioned soul searching offers Brännvall’s team some clarity moving forward.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
