Ahhh, The Force Awakens was glorious, wasn’t it? But now we have to wait another two years before we see what happens next. Sure, we’ll have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to tie us over until then, but the spin-off will take us back to familiar territory with a plot centering around the Death Star. We need something new, and we need something to quench our Star Wars thirst on a consistent basis. What if we had steady stream of Star Wars content coming in, say, the form of TV show? And no, not a silly little cartoon like “Star Wars Rebels” (as great as it is!), but a legitimate, live-action television series.
Turns out there has been a plan for a live-action Star Wars series called “Underworld” for over a decade. And now that Disney has purchased Lucasfilm and is currently raking in the dough with Star Wars: Episode VII, surely they would want to capitalize on the Star Wars fever, right? It makes perfect sense, but unfortunately, it looks as though that glorious concept isn’t going to come into fruition any time soon. TVLine has the scoop:
Once Disney purchased Lucasfilm, jump-starting the film franchise became the priority. So, although Disney-owned ABC — the likeliest home for Underworld — would obviously love to have a live-action Star Wars series on its lineup, “they are focused on their movies,” network president Paul Lee tells TVLine, “so we don’t have any plans at the moment.”
It’s an unfortunate blow. But… wait a minute, who even watches ABC anymore? Everyone knows that Netflix is the go-to source for excellent television these days. And wouldn’t you know it, but the steaming service could potentially swoop in and save the day. The report continues:
Last month, rumors began to circulate that Netflix was in negotiations with Disney to develop a live-action Star Wars series to debut as early as 2017. And Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy told Slashfilm that Underworld was “something we would very much like to explore.”
So don’t give up hope Star Wars fans! It seems like Disney is preoccupied with relaunching the film franchise, but a live-action television series set in the galaxy far, far away could become a reality in a few years. And if it’s produced by a network of Netflix’s caliber, it could very well end up being extremely good. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
