So Nintendo delayed Zelda Wii U, and will no longer release the game this year or show it off at E3 2015. This is not a surprise. Despite its protestations to the contrary, Nintendo does not have a good track record with releasing Legend of Zelda games when it first says it will. It’s just how they do things; these are big games. No original console Zelda game has come out on time since Wind Waker, and Nintendo basically said later on they should have delayed that one too. Zelda Wii U will be worth the wait. But what is Nintendo going to come out with this year to keep us busy?
Wii U Games 2015: Life Before Zelda Wii U
Zelda Wii U was going to be Nintendo’s big game of the year, or at least that’s what they led us to believe. Last year, Super Smash Bros led the system’s fall lineup, with Mario Kart 8 being the big mid-year hit. This year, the big spring games are Splatoon, something of an untested proposition, and Yoshi’s Woolly World. Japan will get Xenoblade Chronicles X, but that won’t come out here for quite some time. Mario Maker is coming out at some point too, although Polygon noticed that Nintendo pushed the published release window from the first half of 2015 to just 2015 generally. Regardless, some of those games will hold us for spring.

But what about fall Wii U games? Right now, there’s only one major game on the table that we expect to come out this fall: Star Fox Wii U. We don’t know much about the game, despite its presence at E3 2014, but Nintendo has been fast-tracking it for a while. Xenoblade could conceivably come out in North America this fall, depending on how long it takes to localize, but other than that, Nintendo doesn’t have a huge lineup, and no games have been announced from their triple-A series. And there’s essentially nothing coming out from third parties this year either.
But don’t worry. Nintendo may only have announced the Zelda Wii U delay recently, but the company has surely known it was a possibility for a while. And that means they have other things in development, things they’ll announce at E3 2015 if not sooner. Metroid Wii U? Probably not. A Pokémon Wii U game? I wouldn’t hold my breath. But a new 3D Mario game? Well… that’s another story.
