New The Surge gameplay footage has been released by Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive, with commentary from game designer Adam Hetenyi, featuring the game’s protagonist in several different combat scenarios. The footage also gives us new looks at the inventory, limb removal and loot mechanics we’ll see in The Surge when it hits PC and consoles later this year.

Those anxious to get their hands on The Surge will likely enjoy the new footage but there isn’t a ton of new information in the video. Many (if not all) of the enemies in the demo have appeared in previous trailers, screenshots and/or demos and there isn’t much weapon variety on display. But the extended gameplay footage does give players an excellent idea of the many ways The Surge will resemble (and differ from) the franchise it draws heavy inspiration from. Its sci-fi setting certainly gives it a profoundly different aesthetic. But it looks like longtime Souls-like fans shouldn’t have any trouble getting acclimated to The Surge.

To our surprise, the new gameplay was clipped from a different point in The Surge ’s campaign than the portion recently shown to press. iDigi editor Mo Mozuch got to spend some hands-on time with the game, his first experience with a Souls-like project, and such builds are frequently reused for marketing at some point before launch. But this week’s The Surge footage doesn’t retread any of the ground you read about a few weeks ago.

For a closer look at The Surge , take some time to watch the new gameplay video from Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive. Then head down to the comments and let us know if you plan to check out The Surge when it hits PC and consoles later this year.

The Surge is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game debuts sometime this May.
