It’s always great to see action games take on another form, be it through unique gameplay design or just straight-up different art design. Lucah: Born of a Dream falls under the latter, and Nintendo Switch owners will be able to experience its haunting beauty once it releases for the Nintendo Switch this July 3.
Developed by melessthanthree and published by Syndicate Atomic, Lucah: Born of a Dream is a very distinct and somewhat minimalist action title with a deeply ingrained focus on its story. It saw an initial run for the PC on Steam back when it was released in August of 2018, and now it takes on a handheld format as a digital download title on the Nintendo eShop. Check out the announcement trailer below.
Lucah: Born of a Dream successfully blends elements of survival-horror, role-playing, and interactive-fiction in a package that’s sure to please those tired of the same tropes found in action titles. It also presents a story filled with wrath and sorrow, following Lucah, a Marked Child. His inner demons have manifested as vicious nightmares, and he must explore surreal dreamscapes and master in-depth elemental combat magic in order to reclaim his identity from the monsters that took it.
Lucah: Born of a Dream mixes ranged and melee combat styles. The game features a different perspective of what an action title can be, mostly due to how different its art style is. Lucah: Born of a Dream also features "Mantras", which can be mixed and matched in order create an endless supply of different combos; for ranged battles, you rely on Familiars, who have ranged elemental magics at their disposal. The game trades in skills for aspects called Virtues, which include slow-motion dodges, stunning parries, or vampiric attacks.
Lucah is also quite deep in terms of its replayability. The campaign itself, although on the short end at six to seven hours for a single playthrough, is filled to the brim with secrets, branching paths, multiple endings and alternate play modes. Through all that, you’re accompanied by this haunting electronic soundtrack that turns Lucah: Born of a Dream into an underrated action gem.
Lucah: Born of a Dream will be released for the Nintendo Switch on July 3. It’s now available to play on PC via Steam.
