Writer Robert Kirkman has slowly revealed Negan’s backstory in The Walking Dead comics, which fans may see play out in the show.

Showrunner Scott Gimple recently spoke to Yahoo! TV about Negan’s potential storylines for The Walking Dead TV series. We won’t get into Negan’s backstory here, but there are key details revealed about the character that will almost justify his actions post-zombie apocalypse. For example, we learn why Negan named his baseball bat “Lucille.”

“I take that ‘Here’s Negan’ story as the backstory,” Gimple told Yahoo! TV, referring to Negan’s backstory revealed in Image+ magazine. “There’s some aspects of it that will probably be cool [on the show]. It’s some fairly far-flung stuff… in the future, you will see some stuff from that.”

“Might need to get Damon Lindelof to do it,” Gimple added. “It might be rather Lost-ian, but we’re talking a good while away.”

However, there is depth to Negan we haven’t see on the show yet. Negan does have a strong moral code, even if it’s not one fans think is good. Negan also knows when he needs to be a bit more sensitive to people; we see this side of Negan when he speaks with Carl.

“Negan is not the Joker, he’s not an agent of chaos,” Gimple told Yahoo! TV. “Negan is a lot like strong men that we’ve seen throughout history. Where we see his, I guess, chaos, or the unpredictability in him, is really the things that come out of his mouth. One of the things that I just loved in the book that Kirkman did is that Negan seems to genuinely like Rick. It kind of frustrates… there’s a weird level of hurt there that Rick doesn’t like him back, and an understanding of why. That’s something I really quite like. I think Jeffrey [Dean Morgan] is doing an amazing job with it.”

Don’t worry, Negan will be around for a while. There’s still a lot of great storylines The Walking Dead has left to explore. What do you think about the show diving into Negan’s backstory? Let us know in the comments below. The Walking Dead Season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
