If you’re in the market for a game that lets you learn while enjoying, then check out What’s the Matter? This educational video game is set to arrive on Steam this March 1. At its core, it’s a twin-stick shooter that offers rogue-like elements and introduces players to the periodic table of elements.
It’s being developed by indie video game company Fundamental Studios. In a post, the company revealed that What’s the Matter? is the first game to be launched in a series of educational games. The goal is to make learning both enjoyable and fun.
In the game, players take on the role of one Matty Matter. Despite being a bit of matter, he goes on rescue missions across the universe to save other bits of matter that need help. Whether lost vacationers, crashed transport ships, or even prison escapees, they all need help.
As players move through space and collect matter friends, they also progress through the periodic table of elements. Be sure to maneuver your way across asteroid fields, around comets, and near stars. Don’t forget to take on numerous aliens, robots, and other creatures.
One gameplay mechanic is that every time a player dies, they start at the beginning. However, they have the chance to upgrade Matty using points collected. There are thousands of upgrade combinations which mean Matty is unique for each play. Upgrades can be unlocked by players as they progress through the game.
Features include:
- Hand-drawn graphics
- Randomly generated levels
- Upgrade system that makes every playthrough unique

Fundamental Studios was founded by Phil and Antonella Arnone, both having a passion for science and wanting to bring that passion to others through video games. Seeing a lack of educational games, the husband and wife team decided to fill that gap in the video game market.
