Apple’s annual fall announcement is set for Sept. 7. Speculation about the iPhone 7 won’t stop until Tim Cook officially unveils the next-generation iPhones. While there aren’t many significant hardware changes, there is one feature (or lack thereof) in particular that is a game-changer. If rumors prove true, the iPhone 7 won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
So how will this work, considering there are few headphones compatible with Apple’s lightning port? A packaging leak (via Techtastic.nl) suggests Apple will include lightning Earpods and a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box. Whether Apple’s new Earpods will be wireless or corded is still unclear. However, Bluetooth capability would make the most sense if the iPhone 7 relies on the lightning port for both charging and audio output. A photo of the supposed lightning port-headphone jack adapter leaked online from Apple’s supply chain in Vietnam earlier this week. Take a look:
The iPhone 7 is also rumored to have a home button that doesn’t click, which may have something do with upgraded sealing and rumors of new waterproofing tech. The lack of headphone jack may also be the reason the iPhone 7 is expected to be a tad slimmer than the iPhone 6s. Apple’s next-generation line may also have double the base storage capacity as the previous models. The iPhone 7 Plus may even get an upgraded dual-lens camera system to become Apple’s new premium option.
