New information on WWE 2K18’s character customization suite is out this week, along with the Road To Glory mode we’ll lead our created athletes through when the game body slams its way onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Oct. 17. We also learned WWE 2K18 will be the latest game to introduce loot crates to its existing player reward structure.
The expansion of WWE 2K18’s character customization tools is the least surprising of Monday’s announcements. Fan creations have unquestionably helped the series stay on positive footing with its community, despite overwhelming discontentment with recent additions to the series, and we’ll see the tools at our disposal continue to improve in 2017. Yuke’s and Visual Concepts have revamped the attribute and skill systems again, overhauled wrestler traits and there’s even a rarity system for ring gear. Character creations have more purpose than ever, thanks to WWE 2K18’s all-new Road To Glory online multiplayer mode.
Road To Glory is an adaptation of the online franchise modes that have gained popularity in other sports games. Players will compete against other WWE 2K18 fans to gain experience and complete a variety of challenges. Road To Glory will also feature monthly pay-per-view (PPV) that are tied to real events on WWE’s calendar. The first Road To Glory gameplay footage was also released via the WWE Games Twitter:
The biggest surprise of the day, for longtime fans of WWE wrestling games, was confirmation of loot crates featured in WWE 2K18 as well as event-inspired ring gear for MyPlayer creations. Loot crates will be awarded for a variety of accomplishments in Road To Glory and MyCareer. Players will also be able to purchase loot crates with 2K’s virtual coins (VC). But that’s only the first step. 2K says players will also need enough VC to activate the item(s) they find in each loot crate before the items become accessible in the character creation menus. WWE 2K18 players will also receive special ring gear for winning Main Event matches on Road To Glory PPV cards.
WWE 2K18 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Switch. The game heads to PC, PS4 and Xbox on Oct. 17; however, there’s still only a Fall 2017 timeline for the Switch port.
