X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer might be developing a follow-up movie featuring the new cast of mutants set in the 1990s. X-Men producer and writer Simon Kinberg recently provided the update regarding the franchise during a press junket for the film, according to Screen Rant .
Kinberg told the media the next film is “set in the ‘90s” in the “alternate” timeline. X-Men: Apocalypse takes place in the 1980s and recast Jean Grey, Cyclops, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, Storm, and other mutants with younger actors.
However, it’s likely we’ll see a New Mutants film before we get another X-Men movie. New Mutants is the highly anticipated spinoff that may star another Game of Thrones alum; the latest rumor claims actress Maisie Williams is up for a role in New Mutants . Williams is allegedly looking to play Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane.
Williams recently told Entertainment Weekly should would love to join the X-Men universe.
“I can’t say much about it at all, but I would absolutely love to be a part of it, [and] to be a part of the Marvel family,” Williams said. “ New Mutants looks absolutely incredible and I’ve always loved the idea of spin-offs and [director] Joshua Boone is incredibly talented. So, yeah, sign me up.”
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27. New Mutants and the X-Men: Apocalypse follow-up do not have set release dates.
