Instagram is clearly New Mutant screenwriter Josh Boone’s social media platform of choice. Mid-April, Boone reassured fans when he turned in the second draft of the New Mutants script to EP Simon Kinberg with co-writer Knate Lee. Now, The Fault In Our Stars filmmaker is back on the ‘gram. This time around, he’s teasing us with a series of suggestive posts displaying the potential New Mutants lineup.
New Mutants follows a team of teenage mutants who are studying at Professor X’s school. The first mutants to join the group were Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane. We don’t see Karma pictured in the posts below, but Magik and Warlock have two of the most well-known stories. Four out of the six original New Mutants members...I’ll take it.
Warlock is a member of the Technarchy, a techno-organic alien species of shape-shifters. He’s the son of Magus, who’s a formidable adversary of the New Mutants and X-Men.
Magik (aka Illyana Rasputin) is teleporter, and the sister of Russian X-Man Colossus (who we just saw in Deadpool). While she’s not an original member of the New Mutants, her tie in with Colossus is perfect for the blossoming X-Men franchise.
Sunspot (aka Roberto "Bobby" da Costa) absorbs solar energy and transforms it into super strength. In his powered up form, he turns all black except for his glowing white eyes.
Cannonball (aka Sam Guthrie) flies at jet speeds and is able to create impenetrable force fields to protect himself, and absorb kinetic impact. His body naturally develops thermo-chemical energy that emanates from his skin, allowing him seemingly blast off and propel himself through the air.
Mirage (aka Danielle Moonstar) is a Native American mutant from the Cheyenne Reservation. She can communicate with the animal world, create illusions, and her image projecting powers are quasi-telepathic.
Wolfsbane (aka Rahne Sinclair) can transform herself into wolf form while still maintaining human intelligence. When in transitional form, the Scottish-born mutant still has access to superhuman abilities.
Early reports had Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Wolfsbane, and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Colossus’ younger sister, Magik. However, Fox disappointed fans when the rumors were shot down at the end of March. Younger Storm, played by Alexandra Shipp in X-Men Apocalypse, is also attached to the film. James McAvoy will reportedly reprise his role as Charles Xavier.
There are three open release date spots for unnamed Marvel and X-Men films in late 2017 and early 2018. New Mutants will be fighting for a spot alongside Deadpool 2. X-Force, or Gambit , will likely follow.
