One of the coolest archetypes coming out of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links latest set, Primal Burst, are the Dark World cards.

Dark World cards are a set of Dark, Fiend-type monsters whose effects activate when they are discarded from the hand by you or your opponent. However, Dark World effects don’t activate after every instance of being discarded.

This archetype is one of the toughest ones to understand, but if you do it can bring some of the strongest effects to Duel Links.

WHAT CARDS WORK WITH DARK WORLDS

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG , there are a few ways to discard from the hand. The first is part of a cost like for Tribute to the Doomed. The second way is as the effect of a card itself and the other is when you discard when your hand has more than six cards in it.

Dark World effects don’t activate when you discard because of your hand limit so don’t worry about that. What many duelists are confused about are when they activate after a card effect.

If a card’s effect won’t activate without discarding a card(s), Dark World monsters’ effects won’t activate because discarding is the “cost” for using it. Cards like the aforementioned Tribute to the Doomed, Monster Reincarnation and others won’t work well with the Dark World archetype.

However, card effects that result in dicards will activate it. The best example is Dark World Lightning, a spell card whose wording has the following: “Target 1 Set card on the field; destroy that target, then discard 1 card.”

The discard effect is secondary and is not necessary to activate Dark World Lightning hence the semicolon in the card description.

It can be very confusing but FrappleJack over on the Duel Links subreddit does an amazing breakdown of how to determine which cards will activate the effects of Dark World cards.

So far in Duel Links, you’ll want to use the following in your Dark World deck: Dark World Lightning, Dragged Down to the Grave, Into the Void, The Cheerful Coffin and Trance Archfiend.

BUILDING A DARK WORLD DECK

Now that you have a better understanding of the Dark World archetype, build a deck around them.

You can go about building a deck in a few ways. The way that’s the easiest, and costs the most, is a beatdown version of Dark Worlds.

Primal Burst has some great Dark World cards but the best and most necessary are Ultra Rare. We’re talking about Dark World Snoww and Dark World Lightning. Snoww’s effect allows duelists to search for a Dark World monster from your deck when it’s discarded so having at least two is very necessary to refill your hand.

Lightning is an all-around great card, especially to get rid of your opponent’s back row. Another great Dark World card is Ceruli, which is a Super Rare and can give some amazing combos. Ceruli gives your opponent Ceruli when it’s discarded then allows for you to discard another card from your hand, but acts like your opponent is doing the discarding. This gives certain Dark World monsters secondary effects and is the best way to summon the strongest Dark World monster, Reign-Beux.

Two monsters are crucial to getting the effects you need, Trance Archfiend and Brron. Brron allows you to discard when it deals damage. With an 1800 attack, you can easily overcome your opponent’s monsters. Trance Archfiend is special in that you can use its effect to discard a Dark World card from your hand, activating its effect.

Players may only want to run one Brron but Trance Archfiend is very important in this deck so be sure to put at least two in your deck.

Here’s an example of a Dark World deck (without the added Snoww).

Round out your deck with spells and traps that can protect your monsters to allow you to draw the cards you need. I put in Broww and Veil of Darkness to draw more cards until I get the added Snowws.

As for an ability, I prefer Power of Dark to boost my Fiend-type monsters.

Since the Dark World monsters are Dark and Fiends, you can add Dark Necrofear and the new Dark Nephthys to give added power if Reign-Beux doesn’t do it for you.
