Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Experiment 101 have just released a new 10-minute gameplay video of the currently under development open-world action RPG Biomutant. The footage showcases some of the game’s characters, environments, enemies, and its expansive crafting system.
Stefan Ljungqvist, the game’s creative director, also spoke with IGN during the Summer of Gaming live stream where the gameplay footage was unveiled. Originally announced in 2017, Biomutant has been in development for quite some time now, but Ljungqvist clarified that they are already at the “end phase of development. He added, “In a massive game like this—like I said it’s very big, it’s the largest game that I’ve ever worked on—you will have issues, you will have technical challenges to overcome, and artistic [challenges], too. But at this stage of the product, we’re cleaning out, we’re squashing bugs, and trying to make these end decisions on making sure that the player understands what to do.”
One of the game’s main calling cards will be its focus on making the game as open-world and as free as possible. Ljungqvis said that this is where the problems lie. Making the game freer may pose a challenge for players that “might be needing more help or guidance”. Finally, he said that they are currently in the process of ironing out the game’s kinks and squashing bugs. Hopefully this means that we will finally get a release date in the near future.
As for the 10-minute gameplay footage, it showcased some of the game’s mechanics such as world traversal and combat, but most importantly its crafting mechanic. It seems that players will be able to craft weapons from scratch and literally swap out every part. For example, you want a sword? You can swap the handle, the blade, and even for some melee items, it looks like there are slots for unique attachments that the player can customize to their liking. It’s the same for guns. The game allows for combining of specific gun parts with different levels of rarity.
Biomutant is an open-world RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world with kung-fu and shooter elements. It is set to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
