Agent Coulson and May have always had good chemistry, but one thing or another always got in the way of a possible romance. They’ve each had their personal struggles, but they’ve remained the best of friends through it all. Agents of SHIELD Season 3 proved they each other’s most trusted ally, but their relationship could grow in ways we haven't seen before this season.
Entertainment Weekly reports Clark Gregg, unprompted, spoke on a possible romantic relationship between Coulson and May.
“There seems like there might be some long gestating sparks happening a little closer to home. I’m just going on what I’ve been reading [in the scripts],” Gregg said. “Something is different between them. I don’t know, something’s going on. They’re just a little different with each other and I can’t quite figure out what it is. They’re either becoming even better friends after all they’ve been through or, I don’t know, I keep feeling like some of these lines are a little flirtatious.”
The romantic vibes became more apparent after May died and came back to life. She was one of the first victims of the Ghostly apparitions created by The Darkhold, a book of black magic. Jemma and Dr. Radcliffe were forced to basically jumpstart her brain, and the only way do to do so was to let her die and then revive her. May revealed to Coulson afterword that he was the last thing she saw before she passed.
“It certainly has had some kind of impact on Agent May,” Gregg says. “Coulson’s very curious about her experience because now one of the people he cares most about in the world is one of the very few people in the world who has had a similar ‘been dead for a while, came back to life’ scenario. That becomes something that he’s very curious about with her.”

Coulson was presumed dead after The Avengers . Loki killed him, but we find out in Agents of SHIELD that Nick Fury’s Project TAHITI brought him back. May and Coulson now have something deeper in common that could bring them together later in the season.
“There are things happening in the coming episodes that give each of them deeper awareness of how much they mean to each other.”
