Just because Daisy is back on the team, for now, doesn’t mean she’ll be any less stubborn. The Agents of SHIELD Season 4 episode 5 promo shows Quake going against Coulson and May’s orders when the team infiltrates a prison. They’re in search of The Darkhold.
Last episode, after Coulson interviewed Eli Morrow, he discovered Dr. Lucy Bauer is the ghostly apparition that nearly killed Agent May. Lucy has mystical powers stemming from an ancient book of sins called The Darkhold. This isn’t the first time SHIELD has been confronted with evil powers from the book. Even Nick Fury, Daniel Whitehall and Red Skull couldn’t find it.
The Darkhold was created by Chthon, an Elder God and the first practitioner of black magic. Indestructible and passed down in generations, the Darkhold was kept on Atlantis before its demise. The book of sins is responsible for the first vampire and the curse of the werewolf. Over the years, various pages of the book have gone missing.
The Darkhold has different origins in Agents of SHIELD. Ghost Rider has a peculiar interest in finding the book, which means it could be tied to how he got his powers. Robbie Reyes’ uncle, Eli Morrow, worked for Momentum Labs--the same place as Lucy Bauer and her team-- who are now all evil ghostly figures. Bauer was working on an experiment that could “create matter out nothing” until something went wrong. Thanks to Eli, SHIELD knows The Darkhold was involved. The holder of the book has infinite knowledge, explaining how Bauer was able to make the impossible possible.
If the book is in the wrong hands, serious damage could be done. In the past, the great sorcerer Doctor Strange has held it to keep others from using it maliciously. Few can use the Book of Sins without losing their souls, however Strange once employed the Montesi Formula to destroy Earth's vampires. It looks like this time SHIELD will be hanging onto it for safekeeping. Well, if they can find it.
While finding the The Darkhold before Lucy Bauer does is the top priority for SHIELD at the moment, it’ll be interesting to see how Momentum Labs got ahold of the book in the first place. Not to mention, how did Ghost Rider get tied up in all of this? Uncle Eli may have had something more to do with all of this than he’s letting on.
Eli and Lucy Bauer’s husband, Joseph, were the only survivors of the Momentum Labs explosion. However, Eli holds Jospeh responsible for the incident and is currently rotting in a jail cell for putting Joseph in coma. At the end of last episode, Lucy stuck her finger through her husband’s head to wake him up and find out the location of The Darkhold.
