You might think the hardest part of a MOBA are clueless teammates, random drops in ping or dying due to lag, but it’s actually picking a perfect hero. Every MOBA revolves around the same formula—there’s a pool of hundreds of characters with unique abilities and traits that you can take into a lane. Some are ranged burst mages, while others are melee tanks that get in your face. Arena Of Valor, at least the American version, has 39 heroes ready to play after you unlock them.
I’ve been playing Arena Of Valor for a week and have years of MOBA experience, so I’ve collected my picks for the best characters to play if your brand-new to the game.
Arthur- The stoic tank has mostly the same kit as Garen, League Of Legends simplest bruiser. He’s a good champion to pick up and learn the game’s fundamentals like laning and learning when to attack or defend. All of his attacks are point and click, so if you miss, you can’t blame lag. Arthur’s one of the first heroes you unlock and is currently my main bruiser for teams that lack a ton of crowd control or peel. He also has the dopest skin in the game, which turns him into the skeleton king from Diablo and it doesn’t cost any freemium currency.
Krixi- The mid lane mage is ripped straight from a Disney movie. Krixi is an amazing burst mage who uses a boomerang phantom, similar to Sivir from League Of Legends, to chunk down enemies with just one attack. Her knock-up is great for keeping enemies in place while you thwack them to death. Her ultimate is an AOE moon shower. For the player who are still learning how to lane properly or when to push the attack, she’s an amazing tool. Unlike a lot of the other easy champions, she has lots of skill shots, but that’s just the way it goes for a magic user. Test her out in the mid lane and you might be surprised how many kills you’ll get.
Chaugnar- When I first saw Chaugnar, I knew I found my main. This tanky elephant with wings is an underutilized tank with massive potential. Everytime he casts an ability, all crowd control effects are removed from him, which means there’s no way to stop him. Using Energy Surge in lane allows you to clear minions and poke enemies, while a good frontline attack with Shockwave spam can squash escaping squishy carries. If your looking for someone to carry with, Chaugnar ain’t your dude. But for the newbie trying to learn tanks, he’s your boy. Also, in the Chinese version, Honour Of Kings, Chaugnar is a little boy riding Kyogre from Pokemon, which is even cooler.
Valhein- One of the first heroes you experience in Arena Of Valor, this shuriken shooter is a grade-A marksmen. Like all MOBAs, ranged carries with strong auto attacks are a staple of any healthy team composition. Knowing how to position yourself to deal the most damage without dying is key to success in the role, but it’s not always easy to do. This Twisted Fate knock-off has a great set of tools, including strong burst damage and a stun, that will help you shred your enemies before they catch you first. Volet, another easy marksmen, is also an option, but knowing how to use her dodge correctly takes practice and skill.
If you don’t like these champions, feel free to try others even if your new. Arena Of Valor is still a relatively new game on our shores and there’s still so much we have yet to learn about heroes and the meta.
