Ark: Survival Evolved v253 just launched yesterday, but we’re here to offer a taming guide for each of the new Dinos. Some, like the Troodon and Tusoteuthis, are extremely unique. New information is still coming out in these early hours, but here’s what we know right now.
1) Tusoteuthis: The Tusoteuthis is essentially a super-aggressive giant squid, so don’t be fooled by its more passive taming style. First, you’ll want to harvest a bunch of Black Pearls from Eurypterid, Deathworms or via fishing. Once you find one in the ocean, the trick is to get it to grab onto something while you sneak between its tentacles and feed it pearls. It’s difficult, but spawning with a bunch of armored Carbonemys is a pretty solid start.
If you do get one, the Tusoteuthis is useful for finding small or mid-size creatures and dragging them into the water. Its ink also slows down marine life, which can make for easier underwater tames.
2) Troodon: The Troodon uniquely tame through a loyalty system, and that makes them a really difficult catch. There are a few methods to consider, and this guide will explain both. The first is to use a capable winged Dino to transport a bunch of them into a taming pen. Then, wait until nightfall, and feed the cluster some high-level Dodos or tamed, neutral Dinos. In time, you’ll earn trust. Without a pen, you can send weaker Dinos to fight the Troodon and lose. All prey must fight back to raise loyalty.
The Troodon have a paralytic bite that can be useful when grouped together. We’ll add more details about location when they become available.
3) Pegomastax: Also a different sort of tame, you must constantly feed Pegomastax high amounts of berries by putting them in your last inventory slot. The creature will snatch the food from you and will slowly rise in meters. They’re often found in the Redwood Forest or Footpaw on the Island map.
In terms of uses, the Pegomastax is way too small to ride. Instead, you’ll have to use it as a farming aide for seeds and berries. Use your larger Dinos for more sustained attacks.
4) Therizinosaurus: The Therizinosaurus is the most standard tame in Ark v253, but it’s one of the most useful. To find one, go to the Volcano or Western Approach on the Island map. If you’re at a high level, you should be able to place it in a large taming pen and tranquilize as usual. Once it’s down, keep feeding it with Fertilized Megalosaurus Eggs from species or found in the environment.
In due time, this large herbivore can be a boon for both resource harvesting and combat.
Ark: Survival Evolved and its v253 update, are available now on PC, Xbox One and PS4. Be sure to check out our beginner’s guide and best Dinos list too.
