It was a very sad night for Team Arrow. In Season 4 episode 18 ‘Eleven-Fifty-Nine’ we get answers, but it costs us Black Canary’s life.

Black Canary pledged tonight was her last as a vigilante early on in the episode. She was all set to hang up her suit and accept a job as Star City’s District Attorney, but Damien Darhk was not going to let that happen.

Malcolm Merlyn, Andy Diggle, and Darhk are a force to be reckoned with. Merlyn steals the Kushu Idol from Arrow’s bunker and delivers it to Darhk in prison. Oliver’s flashbacks confirm this is the same idol from Lian Yu that Reiter was obsessed with. Oliver was able to steal it before Reiter took advantage of its magical powers. The idol appears to suck the life out of dead people and give the user superhuman power.

Gaining the trust of Team Arrow and his brother, Andy was able to find the location of the stone that gives the idol its power. By the end of the episode, Darhk was served everything he needed on a silver platter. He's able to harness a range of abilities from the idols’ powers, including telekinesis and temporary invulnerability. He effortlessly holds Oliver back and stabs Black Canary through the chest with an arrrow for revenge against her father, Quentin Lance. We’re given a glimpse of hope when doctors are able to stabilize Laurel at the hospital, but she goes into cardiac arrest and the Arrow team watches her die. Right before she takes her last breath, she has a heart-to-heart with Oliver and tells him he’s the love of her life. She also asks Oliver for a favor, but we don't get to hear what she asks of him.

Showrunner Marc Guggenheim said Laurel’s death will give the most ‘pop’ going into the next season. It will be interesting to see how Dig deals with the guilt. If only he had trusted Oliver’s instinct that Andy was still working for Darhk, the Kushu Totem's stone would still be safe and sound. Laurel’s father, Quentin, was never able to say goodbye. Now that he’s off the police force, he’s going to have a tough time dealing with his daughter’s death. Let’s hope he doesn't pick up the bottle again. Since Felicity is out of Oliver’s life, suffering another huge loss is going to be tough on him. However, he’ll be more motivated than ever before to take down Darhk for good.

It’s unclear how Black Canary’s death will be worked into DC’s Legends of Tomorrow . For spoilers on how this may affect the Legends of Tomorrow storyline, click here . We also have the infamous grave scene to look forward to. We’ll be seeing The Flash and Arrow on screen together sometime soon.

Don’t get your hopes up that Black Canary will come back to life. Guggenheim refuted claims that Oliver drugged Laurel to fake her death. He also added that we’ll find out Laurel’s last words to Oliver in Season 5.

“No, we’ve done that. We’ve done a fake death before. That’s the thing. We’re always trying to figure out new ways of doing this. That fake out where she was okay and then she wasn’t was our attempt at doing a death that we hadn’t done before,” Guggenheim said.

Laurel will guest star as an Earth-2 villain in the next episode of The Flash , “Versus Zoom.” Black Canary’s actress, Katie Cassidy, also revealed she’ll be in Oliver’s flashbacks in the next episode of Arrow. Oliver’s past comes full circle in this episode. Hopefully, we’ll get some details on what Darhk has in store for Operation ‘Genesis’ when Arrow returns to the CW April 27.
