Team Arrow will be dealing with the aftermath of Black Canary’s death when the series returns to the CW April 27. Diggle holds himself responsible for Laurel’s death and will be struggling to cope with the guilt of refuting Oliver’s claims that his brother Andy is a traitor. Oliver and Quentin Lance will be distraught for obvious reasons. But we can’t forget about Felicity, who recently called it quits after she broke it off with Ollie. Could Black Canary’s death persuade Felicity to rejoin Team Arrow?
Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim spoke on this very question during an interview with TV Line . He affirmed that Felicity joining the team again is a possibility. However, the more exciting revelation is that ‘Olicity’ may not be done for good.
“She’s broken up with Oliver and she’s also broken up with the team essentially. And in Episode 19 [‘Canary Cry,’ airing Wednesday, April 27], we’ll see the undoing of one of those decisions,” Guggenheim said.
Showrunner Wendy Mericle clarified Guggenheim's statement: “One does not mean the other is going to happen. She could come back to the team and that does not mean that she’s back together with Oliver.”
Seeing that Curtis Holt has been promoted to a series regular for Season 4 and now knows everyone’s secret identity after helping defeat Brie’s crazy bees, fans appear to be fairly certain he’ll not only take over Felicity’s position as Overwatch, but eventually become Mister Terrific. If this theory plays out, it would be much more probable that Felicity and Ollie will get back together while she continuous to save the world via Palmer Tech.
On the other hand, if Curtis becomes Mister Terrific sooner than later, he could fill Black Canary’s spot on Team Arrow. In this case, Felicity may return to her post in the Arrow bunker.
Felicity is also a candidate to take over for Laurel as the rumored new Black Canary . However, It’s a bit suspicious that Season 4 Episode 19 introduces a new cast member, Madison McLaughlin. She’ll reportedly be playing a character named Rebecca, who is described as “smart,” “snarky” and an “escapee of a dangerous cult.” A set photo leak shows Dinah Lance (Alex Kingston), Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) and McLaughlin dressed in all black attending Black Canary’s funeral.
What’s more, Guggenheim told TV Line there is a very interesting story involving [McLaughlin’s] character that is something we haven’t done on the show, and is something I don’t think any show has ever done.”
Oliver and the team struggle to come to terms with Laurel’s death, especially Diggle who is overwhelmed with guilt for choosing to believe Andy had changed. Meanwhile, Lance refuses to believe his daughter is really gone and asks Nyssa to help bring her back. A recent Black Canary sighting in Star City only seems to prove his theory that Laurel isn’t actually dead.
TV Line also reports Felicity’s father, Noah Kuttler (aka The Calculator), will reprise his role for a few episodes this season. Season 4 episode 19, “Canary Cry,” airs April 27 at 8 p.m. on the CW.
