Assassin’s Creed Origins teasers have arrived to promote a new gameplay trailer on Thursday, and they’re super creepy. Five masked characters are making threats and they don’t seem too cheerful about what’s to come.
Each teaser arrives via various Ubisoft Europe social media accounts, and each clip highlights a new character and a new threat. Some of the clips are in foreign languages, but here’s a recap of what we were able to understand.
Bearded Man Mask With King Tut Design [Assassin’s Creed France]: “What are you thinking of at night when your eyes are closed and your mind still awake? Do you remember his last smile?” [Link]
Frog-ish Mask [Assassin’s Creed Spain]: “We already know. Do you remember that day? How would you be able to forget it? You do remember it. It was the worst day of your life. We'll meet again, and it will be the last day of your life.” [Link]
Knight [Assassin’s Creed U.K.] : “Watch your back.” [Link]
Horned Creature [Assassin’s Creed Italy] : “It would be best for you to find me first.” [Link]
Woman [Assassin’s Creed Spain]: “Those I met before you were despicable. Do not let me down please!” [Link]
Based on existing franchise lore, most fans believe these masked characters are part of the Order Of The Ancients, a branch of the templars that has operated throughout Egypt since the Ptolemaic dynasty. In fact, they were responsible for getting Cleopatra on the throne. In turn, an assassin snuck into her chambers and killed her with a venomous asp.
Assuming these are the Ancients, we might be able to glean some new story tidbits too. The mentions of “remembering his last smile” and “the worst day of your life” suggest this group was responsible for hurting someone important to somebody. If we had to guess, we’d say the templars likely killed someone close to Origins’ main character, Bayek. That conflict might force him to confront the Ancients during the game. Curiously enough, we know that Bayek initially aligns with Cleopatra to usurp Ptolemy XIII, so, assuming we’re playing as an assassin, some sort of betrayal might be in order from either side.
With still a few weeks to go until Assassin’s Creed Origins hits store shelves, we imagine this week’s new trailer might shed some light on the mechanics and story threads we still don’t understand. We’d also love to see new areas of the map that more vividly illustrate the game’s visual variety.
Assassin’s Creed Origins releases Oct. 27 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
