Ubisoft announced Thursday there will be no new Assassin’s Creed games coming in 2016. This would be shocking news, if we hadn’t totally called it two months ago.

The Assassin’s Creed team has taken to the Ubisoft website to let fans know what the state of the franchise is currently. The majority of the post talks about Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie. The interesting news for gamers comes in the last paragraph.

“This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016,” the post reads. “Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”

With the time off, Ubisoft plans on reevaluating what makes a good Assassin’s Creed game.

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground,” the post states.

While the team confirmed there will be no NEW Assassin’s Creed games this year, that doesn’t mean there will be nothing. iDigitalTimes previously reported that some sort of anniversary collection seems to be in the works. This will probably include the first Assassin’s Creed game alongside the Assassin’s Creed 2 trilogy of games.

As for the future, we’ve heard rumors of an Assassin’s Creed game coming in 2017. This game will reportedly be set in Egypt, and the team is looking to give it more of a “Witcher feel.” This rumor comes from 4chan, however, so take it with all the salt in the world.

So what do you think? Are you happy to see Assassin’s Creed take some time to evaluate what fans want in the future? Are you bummed to not get a new game this year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
