Last month, developers of Assetto Corsa announced that the highly acclaimed sim racer will arrive to the PS4 and Xbox One console on April 22. Following an announcement trailer of a console edition eight months ago, developer 505 Games have gone into radio silence since. However, videos showcasing Assetto Corsa gameplay on PS4 have surfaced on YouTube.
YouTube channel PSNation recently shared a one-hour gameplay video of an Assetto Corsa alpha build for PS4. As alpha build suggests, it's not the full version of the game. Only three vehicles and two tracks are available for play but it's our first peek into this highly anticipated PC-to-console so we're not going to complain too much.
So far, PSNation via GTPlanet has noted that the biggest difference in the port are the changes made to the user interface. The UI is said to be "head and shoulders above" what's currently on PC. New menu music has been added to the console as well. Gameplay-wise, PlayStation Nation does admit that while the graphics on the PS4 look great, it does not match the stunning visuals from the PC. Content-wise, the console version looks to feature the new Ferrari FXX K, which is not available in the PC release at this time.
“We are also working on porting Assetto Corsa to consoles, which is completely based on the code designed and developed for PC, but instead of freezing the development of the PC version, we brought forward the overall process in parallel, creating a symbiosis that takes advantages from each platform,” stated Kunos Simulazioni Co-founder and Executive Producer Marco Massarutto in the official Assetto Corsa blog back in December. “This has guaranteed a successful process of optimization and a different and improved approach in development that will be beneficial for everyone in future. Therefore, those fans who believe that the porting Assetto Corsa on console has the capacity to ruin the 'magic' of the PC version can rest easy, as we can assure you that this is something that will definitely not happen.”
Does the Assetto Corsa alpha build gameplay meet Simulazioni's claims or does it fall short? Well, we're not looking at the full game yet, but we're unimpressed by the graphics. That said, sound engineering of the screaming engine and screeching hard braking sound really great. However, we're not a fan of the dull "water bottle" thud when the car collides with something. That said, Gran Turismo suffers from the same generic sound. HUD features such as the "Lap Delta" notification also helps to make the gameplay look very interesting so far.
