Big news in mangaland, my loves: the “Attack on Titan” manga is going to end in just three years. We can fight about this in the comments, but I would actually call that good news. It means we’re going to get closure on this series within this decade; both from the manga and from the anime (whose second season is still nowhere in sight). And it also means we’re getting more “Attack on Titan” than we originally thought. Both of these are good things.

The original plan for the “Attack on Titan” manga, according to creator Hajime Isayama, was for it to run to a hardly hefty 16 volumes. Considering number 14 is out in November, it’s a good thing that’s not the case anymore, or else we’d be running out of “Attack on Titan” stories very soon indeed. We’ve known since last year that Isayama was now shooting for 20 volumes, but now we’ve got a little more detail on his timeline for that: According to the literary magazine Da Vinci, Isayama has a roughly three-year timeline for ending the story in real-life.
It’s not surprising why the “Attack on Titan” manga got extended: It is, like so many great stories, a tale that grew in the telling. He wants the extra time and space to further pay off the emotional and character-driven storyline, and give each character room to get their well-deserved resolution. So, the story will finish in 2017, give or take.
How Many Seasons Will The “Attack On Titan” Anime Have?
And that opens up another question: How many seasons of the “Attack on Titan” anime are we going to get? Remember, the first season covered about eight and a half volumes of the manga. We’ve been assuming that “Attack on Titan” season 2 would cover about as much, which is part of the reason Wit Studios hasn’t even been working on it yet—They’ve been busying themselves with other “Titan” projects instead while they wait for the manga to get farther ahead. But if they did another season of similar length and scope, we’d only have… three volumes left for a third season.
So I see three options for “Attack on Titan” season 3, come when it may. Either “Attack on Titan” season 2 will end up covering less material, maybe five volumes or so, leaving another five for season 3. Or there will be an abbreviated season 3, not as long as the first one (and presumably the second one) in terms of episodes. I think the first is probably a little more likely: After all, the story has only gotten more complex, and deserves more time to be told. Sounds like it will get it—it’s not like Wit Studios is in some huge rush. This isn’t some “Game of Thrones” situation where they’re going to pass the books. It can take its time and tell this story right, and we’ll still be able to both read and see how the story ends within the next few years.
