Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder had his reasons for introducing Doomsday in his latest superhero flick.

Snyder recently told the Daily Beast he always knew the fight between the titular superheroes wouldn’t be the only focus of the film. Snyder’s team felt it Batman vs. Superman was the perfect time to introduce the villain and dive into the character’s history.

“Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn’t just crawl out of the ground. He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored,” Snyder told The Daily Beast. “To us it really made sense to give [Doomsday] to the audience now. I really wanted to make the audience a promise that… though I’m super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there’s also a bigger world to start to think about.”

Some fans were upset by the introduction of Doomsday in the most recent, full-length Batman vs. Superman trailer. Snyder addressed the concerns about the big Doomsday reveal during an interview with MTV, explaining the trailer didn’t contain any information that would spoil the movie.

“I have the benefit of seeing the movie,” Snyder told MTV. “It’s cool that they think it’s too much and I appreciate people not wanting to know, but there’s plenty that they don’t know. There’s a lot of movie that’s not in the trailer.”

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is hits theaters on March 25.
