Battlefield 5’s release date may have just been leaked by a Swiss website. Not only that, the same site also suggests that Battlefield 5 will be set during World War 1.
This news comes from the website of World of Games, a Swiss video game retailer, by way of Twitter user @Doctor_Cupcakes. World of Games has listed Battlefield 5 with a release date of Oct. 26. Obviously, this should be taken as heavy speculation, as Battlefield 5 hasn’t even been officially announced yet.
Not only that, but an early version of the website gives a description of the game as “Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg” For those that don’t feel like translating that, it means “Multiplayer Tactical Shooter in World War 1.” The listing has since been edited to drop the “World War 1” part.
So let’s step back and look at the information we already know. According to EA, we “should assume” a new Battlefield game will be coming in EA’s fiscal third quarter, which is from October to December. Oct. 26 falls perfectly in that window, so the release date does make sense.
As for a World War 1 setting, I suppose it’s possible, but not likely. After getting a constant stream of World War 2 shooters since the launch of the PS2, companies have started branching out into modern times and the future over the past few years. While it’s possible we could see a return to the past, trends indicate a more futuristic approach to shooters.
Personally, I hope Battlefield 5 is a historical game. Yes, we’ve covered D-Day and the like countless times before, but never with the current generation of consoles. Seeing the most up-to-date hardware tackling a historic war would be exciting.
So what do you think? Are you excited to see Battlefield 5 potentially coming this October? What setting do you hope the game ends up being in? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
