It looks like BELOW won’t actually be available by the end of summer, as originally promised by Capybara Games, and fans waiting for the ambitious 2D dungeon crawler will be disappointed to hear the studio has declined to provide a new timeline for the BELOW release date.

2016 has been such an amazing year, if you’re a fan of video games, that we’d have a hard time blaming anyone who forgot Capybara Games had a new game on the summer release calendar. BELOW isn’t the biggest game we’ll see this year, or even the most original, but Capybara’s minimalist take on the action-RPG was easily one of our most anticipated titles of the summer. Maybe all of 2016. Unfortunately, the studio isn’t comfortable releasing the current build of the game. And it might be a while before we hear anything else about BELOW .

An announcement on Capybara’s website brings the less-than-thrilling news that BELOW will miss its Summer 2016 launch window. The studio stops short of offering a specific reason for the delay but says (in no uncertain terms) that BELOW doesn’t live up to Capybara’s standards. The studio acknowledged fans disappointment but promised the extra work on BELOW will ultimately prove to be worth the wait.

“Making games is hard but rewarding work. Accepting, even after this long development, that the game needs more time is difficult, but it’s important that we are honest,” the studio wrote . “We’re sorry we let you down with yet another delay. But in the end, we need to make certain that the hard work we’ve put into this game turns into something you’ll love, and to us that unfortunately means keeping BELOW in the oven a while longer.”

For a closer look at BELOW , take a couple of minutes to watch the latest gameplay trailer from Capybara Games and/or check out our hands-on impressions from PAX East. Then head down to the comments section and share your thoughts on the BELOW delay.

BELOW is in development for Xbox One and PC. There’s no timeline for the game’s debut.
